House of Hazelwood: Seventy Years of Scottish Masterpieces in a Collection

For over three generations, the Gordon family - one of Scotland’s most important whisky dynasties - has carefully guarded a private reserve of handpicked casks, meticulously aged and set aside for special occasions. Today, part of this incredible treasure has finally been unveiled to the world under the name House of Hazelwood, inspired by the family’s historic residence in Dufftown, in the heart of Speyside.
This unique collection represents the world’s largest archive of ultra-aged Scotch whisky: a fascinating journey through seven decades and every region of Scotland. Each bottling is a testament to an unrepeatable creative season, a long-lost production technique, closed distilleries, bold experiments and visionary insights. The casks are stored in warehouses scattered across Scotland, but before bottling, part of the stock undergoes final maturation in traditional dunnage warehouses near Dufftown - Speyside’s whisky capital - where they are monitored until they reach perfection.

At the heart of the project lies a family legacy dating back to the 1950s, when Charles Grant Gordon - great-grandson of the legendary William Grant - took the helm of the family business alongside his brother Sandy. Charlie, as everyone called him, had expressed a desire to become a distiller at just six years old. He was the driving force behind the company’s growth into one of the largest independent groups in the industry. But beyond his business achievements, what remains today is his long-term vision: the ability to see, in a cask left to mature for decades, a promise that transcends time.
Jonathan Gibson, Marketing Director of House of Hazelwood, shares:
“For this series, we do not follow the convention of bottling whisky of a certain age or specific style on a predetermined schedule. This is a collection of individual whiskies, representing unique casks, experiments carried out over the years and combinations that may never be repeated. At the core of everything is the philosophy that the whisky is ready when it’s ready.”

Offering a flavorful backstory that coincides with the brand’s genesis, Commercial Director Phil Keene reveals:
“I’ll be honest: just over three years ago, members of the Grant family came to me expressing the need to turn this immense collection into something tangible. The risk was seeing an invaluable treasure evaporate without even having the chance to taste it. The rest is history, as they say. One of my most vivid memories is from two and a half years ago, standing in the Blending Room for the first selection among more than two hundred options. I felt like a kid who had been given the keys to the candy store.”
Two souls, one collection
The project was officially launched in May 2023 with the first release, composed of eight bottlings divided into two lines: The Legacy Collection and The Charles Gordon Collection, reflecting two different approaches to whisky selection.

The Legacy Collection celebrates iconic moments in whisky history: first and last casks, vanished styles, blends crafted for special occasions and aged for decades. Each expression offers a privileged glimpse into a bygone era or lost production method.

The Charles Gordon Collection, on the other hand, is the most precious and daring section, reserved for the rarest and oldest whiskies in the entire stock. Each bottle originates from a single cask aged for at least forty years - sometimes much longer - selected for its excellence and absolute uniqueness.
Since 2023, three main releases have been presented: the first in May 2023, The Autumn Collection in September that same year, and finally The 2024 Collection at the beginning of this year. In total, the collection includes 27 bottlings, each one with extremely limited availability, often less than 500 bottles worldwide.
Liquid masterpieces: highlights from an unrivaled Collection

Among the gems of The Charles Gordon Collection stands The First Drop (58 Y.O.), born from the very first drops distilled in 1964 at Girvan, Grain Whisky distillery. It’s a Single Grain that has endured the decades, arriving today as intact and sumptuous as ever. Then there’s The Old Ways (1972), a rare example of whisky crafted using now-abandoned traditional methods.

Another masterpiece is Blended at Birth (56 Y.O.), a blend made from Grain and Single Malt whiskies married together as new make spirits and matured jointly for over half a century. And A Minute to Midnight (45 Y.O.), a “sherry bomb” that balances the intensity of malt with the softness of grain whisky, offering an unforgettable late-night dram.

From The Legacy Collection, standouts include Sunshine on Speyside (39 Y.O.), which surprises with tropical notes of pineapple and mango - an unexpected legacy of wood and time. Or Queen of the Hebrides (36 Y.O.), a powerful tribute to the legendary peated whiskies of Islay.

The Transatlantic (33 Y.O.) is a journey between Scotland and America: a robust Blended Grain with notes of buttered popcorn and a lively palate thanks to eight years in new American oak. In contrast, The Garden at Hazelwood (47 Y.O.) is a nostalgic dive into family memory: scented with lavender and fresh mint, it evokes summers spent in the garden of the Hazelwood estate, the Grant family’s summer residence where it all began.

Another extraordinary Blended Whisky that tells the Gordon family story is Accelerator & Brake, created in collaboration with renowned whisky writer Dave Broom. The intent was to celebrate the partnership between Charles Gordon - bold and daring, “The Accelerator” - and his brother Sandy, known for his thoughtful and measured approach, “The Brake.” Their contrasting personalities found perfect harmony, just as the various whiskies in this blend came together to form a spirit of exceptional and unconventional character.
