Contratto
By Velier
Luckily, we are still in a world where men count!
Giorgio Rivetti and I met to share a project that had nothing to do with sparkling wine, but after hours of meeting, drinking Contratto's home wines, a special feeling was born between Giorgio and me. That day, as a Champagne drinker, I fell in love with this sparkling wine, which is first and foremost a wine and which I find perfectly in tune with Velier. Giorgio and I have one trait in common: we follow words with deeds. And it is from this attitude and our meeting that this collaboration, of which we are both proud, was born.
Overview
History
Contratto, founded in Canelli in 1867 by Giuseppe Contratto, is a historic winery that has written important pages in Italian sparkling wine history, dedicating itself from the very beginning to the production of Metodo Classico sparkling wines from Moscato grapes from Monferrato. As early as 1910, Contratto became synonymous with quality and a symbol of Italian sparkling wine excellence, conquering important foreign markets. In the 1920s, in addition to expanding the production range to include Vermouths and Liqueurs, Contratto's innovative spirit led to the production of the first Italian vintage sparkling wines, a choice aimed at exalting the peculiar characteristics of each vintage. Since 2011, Contratto has been acquired by Giorgio Rivetti, owner of the historic Piedmontese wine cellar La Spinetta, who has been able to relaunch the image of Contratto thanks to the choice of producing wines exclusively from its own grapes and by purchasing and planting new vineyards within the Alta Langa DOCG, a place of excellence for Italian and world sparkling wine production.
Production method
Contratto's current range of sparkling wines is the fruit of the foresight and savoir faire of Giorgio Rivetti and his son Andrea, who have succeeded in creating a line of wines with a profoundly traditional soul that look to the future. Contratto's sparkling wines are all vintage wines, with the aim of being the maximum expression of each vintage, and are distinguished by their dry character (with the obvious exception of the Asti Spumante), by the long periods of ageing sur lies (from 40 months for the Millesimato to 100 for the Cuvée Novecento) and by the fact that the grapes come from individual vineyards of choice. The sparkling wines carry out their entire maturation period on the lees in Contratto's historic cellar, the Wine Cathedral of Canelli, entirely excavated by hand and elected a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. All cellar operations, including remuage, are carried out manually.
