Elements of Islay

By Velier

Our work with Elements of Islay began with our collaboration with Sukhinder Singh. We met Sukhinder through Whisky Live in Paris and the Maison du Whisky. Right from the start, I was struck by the natural warmth of this entrepreneur, who founded Speciality Drinks, the Whisky Exchange and Elixir Distiller’s in England – the production company which, together with us and the Maison du Whisky, ranks amongst Europe’s leading distributors and producers.

This shared vision has therefore led us to act as importers of each other’s products.

Overview

Story

In 2008, whisky importer and selector Sukhinder Singh launched a new and ingenious selection of Scottish malts, ‘Elements of Islay’. ‘Elements of Islay’ celebrates the medicinal character of these whiskies, using bottles reminiscent of those found in a pharmaceutical laboratory and employing the periodic table to identify the different distilleries – the ‘Elements of Islay’. All bottlings are full-strength single cask whiskies, sourced from small batches of between 5 and 20 casks, carefully selected by Sukhinder’s team.

Production method

There are three ingredients: barley, yeast and water. The barley is malted and left to steep for at least two days; it is then crushed and ground to prepare the grains for fermentation. The next stage is called mashing, which involves mixing the ground malt with water at different temperatures: the sugary liquid that remains is the wort, and it is ready for fermentation, which lasts around sixty hours. At the end of this stage, distillation begins; for malt whiskies, this is a double, batch distillation process carried out in copper stills. The spirit must spend three years in an oak cask before it can legally be called whisky. However, the development of its character does not stop there, and most casks intended for single malt whisky spend many years maturing. Through regular sampling, the casks are selected and then bottled.
