Wray & Nephew
Wray & Nephew
By Velier
I never thought I would be able to work with Wray & Nephew, or rather Appleton, which in the past was distributed first by Soffiantino and then by Wax & Vitale, from whom I would never have taken a product away by ethics. Then, through various vicissitudes, Appleton was bought by Campari, and so I had lost all hope. Instead, as fate would have it, Campari approached Velier, as a rum specialist and a major player in the distribution of spirits in Italy. And from there began the collaboration that today allows us to distribute Wray & Nephew, which is a bit like the father of all Jamaican blending rums.
Overview
History
Wray & Nephew Overproof is a symbol of Jamaica and an integral part of everyday life: it is the rum with which meals are accompanied and birthdays, births, weddings and funerals are celebrated. The history of this rum began in 1825, when company founder John Wray, together with his grandson, opened The Shakespeare Tavern in Kingston Town, Jamaica, when it was not yet the capital. At the turn of the first decade of the 1900s, J. Wray & Nephew bought the three Jamaican sugar estates of Greenwich, Carlisle and Monymusk, and in 1917 the Appleton Estate, the second oldest rum distillery in the world and one of the most renowned for its rums. Now owned by Campari, 90% of rum sales in Jamaica are said to come from this famous brand, which is nicknamed 'Whites'.
Production method
Wray & Nephew Overproof is made from molasses from the Appleton Estate in the Black River Valley. The molasses is fermented using water from a spring on the plantation. Fermentation techniques are varied and still not accessible. The overpoof is a blend of rum distilled in continuous column and pot still. Master blender is Joy Spence.

Focus
